Listening

Mastering the Art of Supportive Listening

Good listening helps the listener and the speaker. It improves connection, makes easier to make choices, and enhances undestanding.

Focus: Imagine words are a good soccer game, and you don’t want to miss a single play. Don't look at your phone, don't think about your next meal!

Nod: Think of nods like those little thumbs-up emojis. They show you're following the idea.

Echo: Repeat the most important ideas to show you are listening.

Ask Open-Ended Questions: Be curious. Don't ask 'yes' or 'no' questions. Ask open-ended question.

Avoid the Urge to Solve: Don't try to solve the problem. Just listen.

Empathize: Show you understand their feelings. Say “I understand; "It is not easy;" or "I know you can do it" may help.

Be Patient: Let the other person think and process the information in his own time.

Encourage Exploration: Gently help them to consider different angles.

Maintain Confidentiality: Keep their confidences secure.

Follow Up: After your chat, check in later. It shows you care beyond just that conversation.
